K-12 School Programs
A fieldtrip to the Rubin Museum of Art is an exciting way to enhance curriculum and expand student learning. Tours at the museum for school groups are designed to introduce and develop knowledge of Himalayan traditions while encouraging meaningful explorations of the art. RMA guides can adapt tours to meet specific curricular connections. Tours last one hour and you and your students are welcome to continue to explore the museum on your own afterwards if your schedule permits.

Himalayan Art Encounters
3-session museum-school collaboration
This enrichment program offers K-12 students and their teachers the opportunity to enhance their curriculum with two classroom visits from a museum educator and extended time to explore the museum's galleries during a special tour. Combining interactive discussions with hands-on experience, students create their own meaningful connections to the culture and history of the Himalayas and beyond.
Curricular kit includes materials and project extensions for teachers. Recent topics include The Silk Road, The Spread of Buddhism, and Hinduism in India.
Cost: $500
Fee includes:
- Planning meeting with museum educator
- 2 In-class presentations
- Extended guided tour of the museum (90 minutes)
- Curricular kit and materials

Thinking Through Art
10-session museum-school residency
Now booking for the 2010-2011 school year
Thinking Through Art (TTA) is an in-depth residency for students in grades K-12. TTA develops critical thinking skills, fosters global awareness, encourages self reflection, and teaches basic art techniques using the art and culture of the Himalayan region. Museum educators design and implement this interactive curriculum and work closely with classroom teachers to address New York State standards and meet individual classroom needs. Lessons are based around the museum's permanent collection and topics of special exhibitions.
Thinking Through Art includes:
- Eight in-school classroom sessions (45 minutes)
- Two extended guided tours of the museum (90 minutes)
- Planning meetings with museum educators
- Professional development for teachers
- Hands-on art-making projects with accessible and fun materials
- Online exhibition of final projects and/or portfolios
Cost: $1,500 per residency. 10 sessions each. Minimum 2 residencies required.
Bonus: For schools that book 4 residencies in one semester, the Rubin Museum of Art will include a performance by a Himalayan artist, dancer, or musician for a school-wide assembly at your school.

If you are unable to bring your students on a trip to the museum, why not invite the museum to you? This program for grades K through 12 brings the wonder of Himalayan art and culture directly to your classroom. Led by one of our talented museum educators, this interactive presentation includes an art-making activity and inquiry-based discussion about images and objects from our teaching collection. Classroom Connections are an ideal way to engage your students with Himalayan geography, culture, and visual art.

Pre-visit Lessons
An in-school interactive presentation to prepare students for a trip to the museum
This free program for grades K through 12 brings the wonder of Himalayan art and culture right to your classroom! A 45-minute interactive presentation led by a visiting museum educator may be scheduled free of charge after you reserve your class visit to the Rubin Museum of Art. Lesson includes an art-making activity and inquiry-based discussion about images and objects from our teaching collection to support age-appropriate learning. All presentations begin with a basic introduction to Himalayan geography, culture, and visual art, and generate curiosity and excitement about your upcoming fieldtrip.

1. Himalayan Animal Rides! (Recommended for grades K-12)
Students will be introduced to the geography and culture of the Himalayan region and focus on the animals of the Himalayas. Students will examine images of animals in Hindu sculptures, and hear Hindu stories about these animals. Finally, students will create their own personal animal rides!
2. Marvelous Mandalas (Recommended for grades K-12)
Students will be introduced to the geography and culture of the Himalayan region and focus on the mandala, a compelling geometric symbol in Himalayan art. Students will examine and decode images of mandalas and focus on their geometric and symbolic elements. Finally, students will create their own mandalas!
3. Powerful Protectors (Recommended for grades 3-12)
Students will be introduced to the geography and culture of the Himalayan region and focus on the theme of protection, a frequent and intriguing subject in Himalayan art. Students will examine and decode images of protectors and make connections between the images and their own experiences. Finally, students will create their own personal Himalayan protector!
