Exporting Enlightenment

Cultural, sculptural, and philosophical ideas traveled along the trade routes of Asia from India to the east, north, and south. To trace the spread of Buddhism along these trajectories, we have invited leading scholars and lecturers to discuss the material and cultural exchange that took place on the continent beginning in 600 BCE. All talks are preceded by a curator-led tour of the galleries. Learn More

Lunch Matters: Desert to Oasis – Life of the Uyghur

Desert to Oasis - Life of the Uyghur (May 1 - May 15) The three films in this series document various aspects of Uyghur social and religious life. Three directors—one Uyghur, one American, and one Han—cover three prefectures spread far across the Xinjiang region of China. This series responds to the exhibition Living Shrines of Uyghur China: Photographs by Lisa Ross.

Cabaret Cinema: The Flip Side

Films that show that the reverse of objects can be more revealing than the front; a cinematic accompaniment to the exhibition showing the reverse of Tibetan paintings on the fifth floor gallery.
