Beyond the Illusory World covers the making of stupas and their sculpted railings. The film looks at the site of Bharhut; the railings in the Indian Museum, Kolkata; and the stupas of Sanchi (2nd century bce–1st century).
This series of films by Benoy K. Behl is the first that depicts all of the ancient Buddhist sites of India as well as other Asian countries. The story of the Buddha and of the development of Buddhism is traced through the art and architecture of over one hundred major monuments. The series is presented as a complement to the new exhibition From India East.
About the Speaker
Alex Gardner is the Associate Director of the Shelley & Donald Rubin Foundation and the Director and Editor of the Treasury of Lives, an online biographical encyclopedia of Tibetan and Himalayan religion. He completed his PhD at the University of Michigan.
