Polanski's first English language film is a shocking horror experiment about a woman's (Catherine Deneuve) slide into mental torment due to sexual repression. Her paranoia has deadly consequences, yet she remains the unwilling victim of her psychosis throughout. This film is widely considered to be one of the great psychological thrillers.

Dr. David McDowell has long been a leader in American psychiatry. He and served on the scientific program committee of the American Psychiatric Association for many years, as well as being its acting chair for several terms. He is the founder of Columbia University's Substance Treatment and Research Service, as well as their outpatient Opiate Treatment Service. Dr. McDowell is the author of numerous scholarly articles and chapters as well as the well-regarded book, Substance Abuse: From Principles to Practice (Brunner-Mazel). His scholarly work has focused on co-occurring psychiatric disorders and substance abuse problems, in particular, club drugs, such as MDMA and marijuana. He has also written widely on issues of sex and sexuality, the subject of this film. He has a private practice in New York City.
