Set in a private mental institution, a trainee occupational therapist, Vincent Bruce (Warren Beatty), becomes dangerously obsessed with a schizophrenic patient, Lilith Arthur (Jean Seberg). As they grow closer, the two protagonists' established identities swerve in and out of sanity. Aspects of the transference/counter-transference relationship, fundamental to the practice of psychotherapy, come to the fore in this cleverly scripted drama.
