Sherpas, RMA Guides, and some of the world's most experienced Mount Everest climbers will lead these young climbers through the basic camping, safety, teamwork, and leadership skills necessary for high altitude climbing. Led by Robert Anderson, they will explore Himalayan art, Sherpa culture and food, and learn about mountaineering etiquette. In order to reach the summit, participants must overcome the challenges climbers face, such as tying knots with mittens on and operating two-way radios. Anderson, a veteran of eight Everest expeditions, led the 50th anniversary summit climb in 2003. He will rappel straight down the center of RMA's spiral staircase, hooked into a rope suspended from the museum's 90-foot high atrium. At nightfall the climbers will descend to base camp to enjoy a hearty tsampa dinner, exchange stories of the mysterious yeti that roam the slopes of Everest, and fall asleep under the mighty mountain's peak.
The other mountaineers include
Peter ("Mr. Everest") Athans, the current record holder (with Dave Hahn) of the most Everest ascents for a non-Sherpa (seven).
Mike Barker, of the American Alpine Club is Risk Management Program Coordinator for the City of New Haven and a veteran of all three previous Peak Experiences at the Rubin Museum of Art.
Sophia Danenberg, the first African American to reach the summit of the world's highest mountain.
Katherine Leonard, a glaciologist at Columbia University's Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory. Her research on snow and ice has involved several international expeditions to Antarctica, the Swiss Alps, the Peruvian and Chilean Andes, and New Zealand.
The Sherpas Lhakpa Tharky Sherpa, Kippa Sherpa, Pemba Gyalzen Sherpa and Passang Chhiring Sherpa.
Tickets: $175 per child (registration is limited to forty children). Please call 212.620.5000 x 344 for more information and to register or download the information and pay online.
This program is presented in association with the American Alpine Club (New York Chapter) as part of the second World Science Festival.
