The Image of the Buddha concerns the making of images of the Buddha, particularly in the art schools of Mathura and Gandhara (1st–2nd century).

This series of films by Benoy K. Behl is the first that depicts all of the ancient Buddhist sites of India as well as other Asian countries. The story of the Buddha and of the development of Buddhism is traced through the art and architecture of over one hundred major monuments. The series is presented as a complement to the new exhibition From India East.
About the Speaker
Katherine Kasdorf received her Ph.D. in South Asian Art History from Columbia University in 2013 and has taught courses on the art of South and Southeast Asia at Columbia University and New York University. In September 2013, she will begin a curatorial position with the Shraman Foundation in Dallas, Texas, to help develop a museum and learning center dedicated to cultural production in South Asia, focused especially on Jainism.
