SMOKE SCREENS:

  • San Juan Batista, the Spanish mission that features in key scenes in the movie doesn't actually have a bell tower - it was added with trick photography.
  • The zoom out/track in shots were done with miniatures laid on their sides, since it was impossible to do them vertically.
  • Death imitates life, as in Maeterlinck’s Bruges le mort.

About the Speaker

Alex Stone's writing has appeared in The New York Times, The Wall Street Journal, Harper’s, Discover, The New Republic, and The Huffington Post, among other places. He is the author of Fooling

Houdini: Magicians, Mentalists, Math Geeks and the Hidden Powers of the Mind—a book about the underground world of magic and its ties to psychology, neuroscience, physics, mathematics, gambling, and crime.

Stone graduated from Harvard University with a degree in English and has a masters degree in physics from Columbia University. He grew up in Wisconsin, Texas, and Spain. He currently resides above a bar in Brooklyn.
